The Benefits of Ignorance
If ignorance is bliss, Father said,
shouldn't you be looking blissful?
You should check to see if you have
the right kind of ignorance. If you're
not getting the benefits that most people
get from acting stupid, then you should
go back to what you always were—
being too smart for your own good.

Good poem.... how come you didn't include all of it or a link to the rest of it? Papa

You are right! That's the whole poem. I'm not sure why I thought it went on and came around a couple more times before ending. Aren't the poems on Writer's Almanac a daily blessing? Sometimes more than others, but always a glimpse beyond one's own boundaries with gleamings reflecting back into the shadowy corners or our consciousness. Poetry is one of the things that gives life meaning. Being alive sometimes is mysteriously vacuous. What's the difference if one were dead? Ah...that's where the poems come into the picture. The dead don't write poems. They wrote poems when they were alive, but now all that remains is the poetry. Meanwhile, poems continue to be written by the living and continue to reveal truths to the rest of us as we puzzle out our existences here in this temporary
zone of pain and pleasure.

Reading your post again just now led me to a question: Why don't you have a blog? You certainly have no lack of interesting things to say. Maybe it would be a good outlet for those creative energies that are wasted on your job.
